About Us

Dr. Jennifer Payne McCartney, PT, DPT
Director/Chief Physical Therapist

Jen was raised in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York. She decided at a young age that she wanted to be a physical therapist. When it came time to look for a college, she did not have to look far to find the rigorous program at Ithaca College where she attained her BS in Clinical Science and MS in Physical Therapy in 2004/2005 respectively. She completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Mass General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals in January of 2015. She is certified in a unique method for rapid healing, rehabilitation and injury-free training and conditioning called the Burdenko Method (www.Burdenko.com). Along with her extensive training in the science and application of physical therapy techniques, she truly cares for her patients and she works for positive resolution of their pain and dysfunction. Jen promotes wellness to all of her patients encouraging them to live an active lifestyle especially upon completion of physical therapy.  When not found at Horizon, Jen enjoys spending time with her family and friends, sailing, snorkeling, SCUBA diving,  hiking, and traveling.

Sarah Terrible
Occupational Therapist

Sarah Terrible graduated with her BS in psychology from Ursinus College in 2006. Sarah later graduated from Temple University with her Master’s in Occupational Therapy in 2011. She has completed a level II clinical rotation in mental health at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth VA which piqued her interest in mental health OT. Sarah has worked with wounded warriors and active-duty members who were diagnosed with conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, and traumatic brain injury. She particularly enjoyed this setting with how creative and client-centered treatments could be.

She has worked in outpatient orthopedics for the last 12 years treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions such as nerve compression/tension injuries, tendonitis, fractures, post-operative care, chronic pain, and just general age-related changes.  In 2021, Sarah returned to her psychology and mental health roots and began treating clients at a private practice psychology office.  In this setting, she collaborated with psychologists, social workers, and counselors to work with clients experiencing mental and emotional stressors such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, mood disorders, and executive dysfunction.  While she enjoyed serving others in traditional outpatient settings, she always felt like a component was missing in providing truly holistic care to others.  In 2022, she received her master reiki certification (Usui-style) in Asheville NC.  Sharing the magic of energy work with herself and others has been the most fulfilling role yet. While St. Thomas is no longer her physical home, Sarah is excited to still be a part of the Virgin Islands community and offer virtual services with Horizon Physical Therapy as the Caribbean was her home for 9 years.

In addition to providing OT and reiki services, Sarah enjoys teaching group exercise classes such as HIIT, strengthening, and stretching as well as mindfulness classes with a focus on mind-body connection and breathwork.  Teaching others and helping them to “get back in their bodies” is extremely empowering and another source of spiritual connection and development.
